Fugetsudo’s bite-size cheese manju is easiest to understand as a three-flavor tasting set. The pieces are small, the differences are clear, and the point is not to crown one absolute winner. It is to notice how the same idea—dough plus cheese—shifts with plain, chocolate, and matcha.
I bought the three flavors as an assortment and tasted them in that frame.
> **Quick take:** Plain is the baseline: soft castella-like dough and firmer cheese. Chocolate adds a cocoa / chocolate-cheesecake turn. Matcha brings fresh aroma and a bitter finish. Choose the assortment if you want variety in one small package.

What is Fugetsudo bite-size cheese manju?
This is the smaller Fugetsudo cheese manju line, sold for tasting multiple flavors. It is a different product experience from the fuller Original Cheese Manju, which in my tasting leaned crisp-cookie and contrast-heavy.

Plain: the baseline
Plain looked round and soft. The dough felt gentle—closer to cake or castella than to a crisp cookie. The cheese kept a firm shape rather than reading only as cream.
The pleasure was the delay before they fully blended: the harmony of waiting for shell and cheese to meet.

Chocolate: the useful change of pace
Chocolate stood out for a slightly bitter cocoa impression. Overall it leaned toward chocolate cheesecake more than toward a plain cheese manju with a light cocoa dusting.
I did not record every texture detail for this flavor as fully as for plain, so I keep the claim at that flavor impression rather than inventing a complete dough-and-cheese timeline.

Matcha: aroma first, bitterness last
Matcha was the most sequential. Nose first: a fresh, grassy aroma. Then a gentle mouthfeel. At the end, matcha bitterness tightened the finish while the cheese stayed mellow.
> 鼻には草原のような爽やかな香り。 > *In the nose, a meadow-like freshness.*
That contrast—fresh aroma, soft texture, bitter close—makes matcha the assortment’s clearest “variant” personality.

Who is this assortment best for?
Choose the bite-size set if you:
- want to taste three directions without committing to one large classic;
- like matcha or chocolate turns on a cheese base; or
- prefer small pieces for sharing or paced tasting.
Choose Fugetsudo Original instead if you want one fuller, contrast-driven classic rather than a flavor flight.
A small selfish tip: keep the seal
Here is my slightly meddlesome advice. The assortment box comes with a clear adhesive seal. Do not throw it away the moment you open the package.
If you stop halfway—say after plain and chocolate, saving matcha for later—that little sticker is perfect for closing the box again. Stick it somewhere obvious when you open the pack, then reuse it. It is a tiny habit, but it keeps the remaining pieces happier than an open carton left on the table.

A note for friends overseas: thank the tiny guardian, then let it go
Japanese snack boxes often hide a small packet that looks a bit like silica gel. In this Fugetsudo assortment, mine was labeled **Ever Fresh** (エバーフレッシュ)—an **oxygen absorber** (*datsusanso-zai* / 脱酸素剤) from Torishige Sangyo, not a snack and not “just a dryer.”
Minimum rule first: **do not eat it.** The packet itself says **DO NOT EAT** / たべられません. Do not microwave it either.
Then enjoy the friendship properly. These little packets are quiet bodyguards. They pull oxygen out of the sealed box so the cheese manju stays tastier for longer. When you open the assortment, give Ever Fresh a small bow of thanks—*arigatou* for guarding the flavor—then send it to the **burnable trash** (*moeru gomi*). In ordinary household sorting in Japan, that is usually fine; if your local rules differ, follow those.
Different brands show up from box to box. The ritual stays the same: do not eat, say thanks, trash. I plan a fuller feature on these packets later.
